Project Abstract:
The use of multilingual chatrooms has become increasingly popular in today’s interconnected world, allowing individuals from different linguistic backgrounds to communicate and interact online. One common linguistic phenomenon observed in these chatrooms is code-switching, where speakers alternate between two or more languages within a single conversation. This study aims to analyze code-switching in multilingual chatrooms, focusing on the patterns, frequency, and factors influencing code-switching behavior.
The research will be conducted through a qualitative analysis of messages exchanged in selected multilingual chatrooms. Data will be collected using a systematic sampling technique, and analyzed using content analysis and discourse analysis methods. The study will also draw on existing theories and literature on code-switching to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon in the context of online communication.
The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on code-switching in multilingual contexts, shedding light on the unique features and challenges of code-switching behavior in online chatrooms. The implications of the findings will be discussed in relation to language use, identity construction, and social interaction in virtual communities. This research is valuable for linguists, communication scholars, and language educators interested in exploring the dynamic nature of language use in digital communication spaces.
