ABSTRACT

This research work empirically explored the importance of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria. The objectives of this study were to examine the nature of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria, to ascertain the prospects of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria. The scope of the study is FCT in 2020 making use of its residents, information theory was used as a framework. The research design used for this study is survey, the population targeted for this study consists of all residence of the six LGA in FCT.  400 residents were used as sample size and cluster sampling technique was applied. Instrument used for this study is the questionnaire. Data collected were collected from primary sources. From the analysis of the data, the findings shows that the standard of radio broadcast in Nigeria is average, the radio broadcast will help improve the economy and perform vital function if allowed in an enabling environment. Following the findings, it was recommended that the standard of radio broadcast/programs should be raised, radio stations should be allowed to practice in an enabling environment. The study concludes that radio broadcast/programs is very important in Nigeria.

Keywords: radio broadcast/programs, mass media, Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background to the Study

The world is fast becoming a global village and a necessary tool for this process is communication of which mass media is a key player. The quantum development in the mass media industry all over the world is very rapid as one innovation replaces another in a matter of weeks. Emerging trends in socio-economic growth shows a high premium being placed on information and communication technology (ICT) by homes, organizations and nations.

Broadcasting refers to transmission of electromagnetic audio signals (radio) or audio-visual signals (Television) that are accessible to a wide population via standard readily available receivers (Ogunmilade, 1998). Mass media refers to a diverse array of media technologies that reach to a large audience via mass communication. Broadcast media transmit information electronically via media such as films, radio, recorded music or television. Radio broadcasting is transmission of audio (sometimes with related metadata) by radio waves intended to reach a wide audience. Stations can be linked in radio networks to broadcast a common radio format, either in broadcast syndication or simulcast or both. Signals can be either analog audio or digital audio.

Historically speaking, the broadcast media got to Nigeria in 1932, when radio broadcasting service of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) started as empire service of the BBC. But in 1933, after realizing the role of Broadcasting within the educational field the BBC transmitted the first educational programme to her West African overseas service.

Radio broadcast provide real-time information, and some that broadcast 24 hours can provide the most recent updates to listeners. Radio has the ability to reach across borders and can become a valuable source of information where reliable news is scarce. Radio has proved its worth in times of emergency, in small communities it provide an outlet for regular community messaging and activities such as local sport, community messaging, local business advertising etc. more importantly, radio is easy to use, it’s live and it’s human.

Thus this study seeks to examine the importance of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria.

1.2. Statement of the Research Problem

The radio broadcast/programs are considered important to any society. Radio broadcast in Nigeria is not devoid of challenges. Umechukwu (2001) noted thus:

With regard to the law, it must be accepted that the media house, private or otherwise function under strict government regulations, they are not free to air any news items as they arrive. For the private media, they must contend with law enabling their establishment.

Apart from the above, Iruene (2003) noted that technological backwardness of African countries such as Nigeria cost a big challenge to the Nigeria media. This seeming problems, invariably are likely to truncate information dissemination. Thus the need arises for proper evaluation and assessment of this problems and exploration of the importance of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria.

1.3. Objectives of the study

The aim of this study was to assess the importance of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria. The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the nature of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria.
  2. ascertain the prospects of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria.

1.4. Research Questions

This study will be guided by the following research questions:

  1. What is the nature of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria?
  2. What are the prospects of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria?

1.5. Significance of the Study

The critical nature of radio broadcast/programs to the success or growth of any society is given. Empirically, this study is carried out to identify the importance of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria so as to ameliorate the stations from her problems.

This study will be important to broadcast stations in particular and Nigeria in general, it will help guide the management of broadcast stations on how it can operate. It will teach the society the importance of radio broadcast/programs.

This study will be of utmost importance to investors, government and the researchers because it will provide policy recommendations to the various Nigeria stakeholders taking adequate measures in the broadcasting industry for rapid capacity investment.  It is hoped that the exploration of radio stations will provide a broad view of the operations of the media house to investors and government. The changing character of the broadcasting industry especially, the licensing of online radio has affected the industry in recent times and will push studies on importance of radio broadcast/programs on the industry to new evidence(s). It will contribute to existing literature on the subject matter by investigating empirically the role, which radio broadcast/programs plays in the broadcasting industry of the country. This study will be of benefit to;

The Academia: members of the academia will find the study relevant as it will also form basis for further research and a reference tool for academic works.

Government: this study will reveal to the government happenings in the broadcasting industry. Formulation and implementation of policies based on this findings would ensure development in the industry.

Investors: this study shall also be valuable to the investors especially those who may have research interest as it shall guide their private investment decisions.

1.6. Scope of the Study

This study is intended to examine the importance of radio broadcast/programs in Nigeria in 2020 using resident of federal capital territory (FCT).

1.7. Operational Definition of Terms

The following terms have been defined operationally.

  • Radio broadcasting: is transmission of audio by radio waves intended to reach a wide audience.
  • Broadcasting: the distribution of audio or video content to a dispersed audience via any electronic mass communications medium.
  • Radio: sound communication by radio waves, usually through the transmission of music, news and other types of programs from single broadcast stations to multitudes of individual listeners equipped with radio receivers.
  • Importance: the state or fact of being of great significance or value.
