INTEGRATION OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN THE TRAINING OF ADULT EDUCATION STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN ENUGU STATE
ABSTRACT
This study sought to assess the extent of Information and Communication Technology integration in training adult education students in tertiary institutions in Enugu state. The design of the study was a descriptive survey. Five research questions and two null hypotheses were generated to guide the study. The population of the study comprised 123 respondents. The entire population of 123 respondents was used for the study. Therefore, no sampling was done. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. Percentage scores were used to analyze the research questions. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer research questions 2 – 5 while t-test statistics was used to test the two null hypotheses. The findings of the study indicate that the types of available ICT materials for the training of adult education students in tertiary institutions in Enugu State are: Desktop computers, Laptop computers, Notebook computers, Tablet PC’s, Smart board, Flash drives, CD-ROM/WR, Word processing packages, PowerPoint presentation packages among others. ICT is integrated into the training of adult education students in tertiary institutions in Enugu State to a great extent in many ways like: use of data projector in teaching, use of PowerPoint in presentation of information during instruction and so on. Challenges hindering the integration of ICT into the training of adult education students in tertiary institutions in Enugu State include: non- availability of desktop, laptop and notebook computers, non-availability of application and utility software, data projector, among others. With respect to the hypotheses; there is no significant difference in the mean rating of male and female adult education students on the extent of integration of ICT into teaching of adult education students and on the challenges hindering the integration of ICT in tertiary institutions in Enugu State. Implication of the study to Adult Education and recommendations were highlighted. It was recommended that Federal and State government should ensure proper funding of tertiary institutions in Enugu State to enable the purchase and greater integration of ICT into the training of Adult education Students in these institutions.
